How long does a ceramic coating last?

The honest answer: as long as the coating you choose — we install 3-year and 5-year options — and as long as you look after it.

A ceramic coating isn’t a wax that washes off in a month — it’s a hard, semi-permanent layer that bonds to your paint. At the JD studio in Abbotsford we install two lengths: a 3-year coating and a 5-year coating, each a certified installation backed by a written warranty. Which one you choose is the biggest factor in how long it lasts — but it isn’t the only one.

What determines how long it lasts

Two identical cars can get very different lifespans out of the same coating. It comes down to four things:

  • Preparation. A coating bonds to what’s underneath it. Properly decontaminated, corrected paint gives it a clean surface to grip — the single biggest predictor of durability.
  • The coating tier. A 5-year coating is a thicker, more robust system than a 3-year one.
  • How you drive and store it. A garaged weekend car keeps its coating far longer than a vehicle that lives outside and racks up highway miles.
  • How you wash it. Gentle maintenance washes preserve a coating; automatic brushes and harsh chemicals wear it down early.

3-year vs 5-year — which one?

If your vehicle is a daily driver that lives outdoors, a 3-year coating is often the practical choice. If it’s garaged, freshly corrected, or a car you plan to keep, the 5-year coating gets you more protection over its life. There’s no universal answer — we look at your vehicle and how you use it, and give you a straight recommendation at the inspection.

How to make a coating last

The maintenance is genuinely easy — that’s part of the point:

  • Wash by hand (or a touchless wash), never an automatic brush.
  • Use a pH-neutral car shampoo — no harsh degreasers.
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry to avoid water spots.
  • Come back for the occasional maintenance detail to keep it topped up.

And the warranty

Both the 3-year and 5-year coatings come with a written warranty, because they’re certified installations done in a controlled studio — not a driveway. That’s what lets us stand behind how long they last.

Bring the car in and we’ll tell you which coating fits it, and what to realistically expect — no upsell.
